Clinical Supervision for Counsellors and Therapists Across Australia
Reflective, ethical and structured supervision – delivered online and by phone in English and Spanish
What is Professional Supervision in Counselling and Clinical Practice?
Professional supervision in counselling is a structured and collaborative process where practitioners reflect on their clinical work, discuss professional challenges, and maintain safe and ethical practice. In Australia, supervision is a requirement set by organisations such as the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), supporting accountability, ongoing learning, and client safety. It is distinct from therapy, focusing on the practitioner’s professional role, decision-making, and responses within their work rather than their personal life.
Supervision also provides a safe space to identify risks, maintain professional boundaries, and respond to complex client work with greater clarity.
Supervision can be provided individually or in group formats (subject to demand). Sessions are delivered online or by phone, with availability in English and Spanish.

Our Clinical Supervision Approach – The STS Supervision Model
Our clinical supervision is grounded in the award-winning STS (Supervision Training Services) model, providing a nurturing yet structured space dedicated to the professional and personal development of counsellors and allied health practitioners across Australia. Clinical supervision at SCSS is informed by the STEP-UP supervision framework developed by Supervision Training Services (STS), a training program recognised by professional associations including ACA and PACFA. Supervision arrangements and eligibility for registration or renewal requirements depend on the supervisee’s professional association and applicable standards.
The STEP-UP Framework
At the heart of our model is the STEP-UP framework, an evidence-based structure that elevates the supervisory experience beyond a simple “check-in”. This model prioritises your individual wellbeing while ensuring safe, ethical, and effective practice through six key areas:
S - Support
Supervision provides a safe and supportive space for reflective practice, guidance, and professional discussion, where supervisees explore their caseload, develop clinical confidence, and gain deeper insight into their professional practice. “Support” means: Feeling heard and valued, receiving professional containment, and accessing a reflective space to process complex cases
T - Track
Supervision involves tracking professional growth and clinical outcomes over time.
This ensures adherence to ACA and PACFA best practice standards and promotes ethical decision-making.
“Track” means: Reviewing professional development milestones, reviewing ethical boundaries, and ensuring ongoing accountability in practice
E - Educate
Supervision is an educative process that enhances a practitioner’s knowledge, skills, and professional judgment. We bridge the gap between theory and real-world clinical practice.
“Educate” means: Building competence in ethical and relational areas through case discussion and evidence-informed feedback
P - Performance
Professional Supervision encourages continuous improvement and professional accountability to maintain high standards of client care and clinical competence.
“Performance” means: Reflecting on client interventions, maintaining ethical standards, and receiving constructive feedback to support skill mastery.
It does not refer to job performance review
U - You (Self-Care)
A cornerstone of our clinical supervision services is supporting the wellbeing of the practitioner. Counsellors who prioritise self-care and burnout prevention provide the highest quality of ethical care for their clients.
“You” means: Promoting practitioner’s wellbeing, self-care, resilience and professional boundaries.
P - Practice
We support the practical aspects of counselling in Australia, whether you operate in private practice, agencies, or community settings. This ensures your “business of practice” remains aligned with professional ethics.
“Practice” means: Strengthening professional practice that is ethical, sustainable, well-managed and aligned with your professional goals.
